Distribution of economic growth and state performance at the municipal level in Colombia. Reflections on local management from a spatial approach
Abstract
This work aims and focuses on establishing the existence of spatial patterns in the distribution of economic growth and State performance at the municipal level in Colombia during 2020. For the methodology, data from Colombian government entities related to GDP per capita and municipal performance were considered, inequality measurement techniques such as dispersion, the Lorenz curve, the Gini coefficient, the Theil index and the Atkinson and Pietra metrics were used; additionally, exploratory spatial data analysis (AEDE) was used, through the Morán index and spatial cluster analysis. As a result, the municipalities of spatial category presented the lowest inequality and those of sixth category, the highest. On the other hand, a statistically significant spatial distribution pattern was found that follows a positive spatial autocorrelation behavior in the selected variables. As a conclusion, the results are linked to a network of intermunicipal relations that makes both economic growth and State performance at the municipal level have a strong dependence on the immediate environment of the municipalities, their neighborhood. The contrast of the hypothesis raised in this work highlights the need to incorporate the spatial component in public policies, such as tax transfers and incentives, aimed at reducing inequalities between municipalities.
