Characterization of the SMA connectors in a transmission line through its S-parameters
Abstract
This document presents the analysis and relevant results related to the characterization of the SMA connectors coupled to a 50 Ω transmission line. The characterization was carried out by using a Rohde & Schwarz FSH8 spectrum analyzer, with which two of its S-parameters were measured and then compared with the simulation behavior of the line, with and without the connectors. The relative error obtained in each of the cases evidences some of the effects that were encountered due to the influence of the connectors, and enables a closer approach to the expected behavior in this type of implementation. On the other hand, it can also be concluded that the SMA connectors contributed to a frequency shift of the resonance of the line, as well as a change in its attenuation. It can also be established that an adequate and complete calibration of the ports in the equipment that is used for measurements in high frequency is fundamental to obtain correct results and to discard sources of possible errors. Similarly, from the simulation, it is feasible to reproduce the main effects that the connectors used in the measurement of a radio frequency can have. Finally, given that each connector contributes particular errors that are impossible to predict with certainty, it is necessary to use additional processing techniques that allow these errors to be minimized.
