Neighborhood stores: an option to face unemployment
Abstract
In Colombia, the unemployment rate has increased during the last year, and this has been a crucial factor in the creation of new businesses known as neighborhood stores, which are those establishments where a large variety of retail products are sold.
The neighborhood stores have been created in response to the lack of opportunities in the labor market and as an option to generate income so that shopkeepers can meet their own basic needs and those of their families, however, this does not ensure the quality of life of the store owner; on the contrary and according to the study that was carried out, shopkeepers could be starting to become slaves of their own businesses due to their extensive working hours, non-existent rest days and annual vacations, and the informality that in many cases is reflected in the avoidance of the payment of labor obligations such as health insurance, and that end up being subsidized by the State.
