Abstract

The aim of this paper is to show how some of the inclusive language strategies which, analyzed by EscandellVidal (2020), exist, at least, since the 16th century in Spanish. Concretely, the study is focused on the sermons of the tertiary Franciscan Sister Juana de la Cruz (1481-1534). The purpose is to test the following hypothesis: "when she feels that she needs to break the ambiguity of the generic masculine, Sister Juana uses linguistic strategies that today we would consider included within the politically correct inclusive language, referring either to the whole audience or only to men.” To demonstrate this hypothesis, we first explain in detail what the generic masculine is and what methodology is followed in the analysis of the selected sermon, Santa María, sacerdote grande. Then, we proceed to the detailed study of the phenomena recorded in the text, among which lexical feminization, splittings, epicenes and collective nouns stand out. The examples show that Sister Juana de la Cruz introduces some of these strategies to break the ambiguity and to ease a single interpretation of her words. She is, therefore, a true master of oratory, who undoes the ambiguity of the generic masculine following discursive criteria that allow her to successfully carry out her communicative intentions. In conclusion, the hypothesis that is intended to be demonstrated is confirmed.
