The regulation of working hours and its effect on economic growth: an international empirical analysis
Abstract
The idea of regulating working hours is related to various concerns, most notably the challenge of maintaining national productivity while reducing working hours through different interventionist regulations by the State. Therefore, a quantitative, correlational, explanatory, longitudinal, non-experimental analysis was implemented using a non-probabilistic sample of OECD member nations from 2000 to 2022. This analysis examines the effect of working hours on economic growth. The resulting Spearman correlation suggests a strong negative association between variables, with a significant value of -0.61. Meanwhile, the econometric model predicts that each additional hour of work per week (52 hours annually) would generate a deficit of -$1,400.51 in annual per capita gross domestic product (GDP), considering an intercept of $77,685.45. This is explained by an R² within 22.92% and a 99% confidence level (P<0.01). In conclusion, we can determine that working more does not necessarily lead to greater economic growth; on the contrary, it has a negative effect on the economy and the well-being of its population.
