"Mamitis" and other ideologies linked to motherhood and fatherhood in the normative dictionary
Abstract
This contribution aims to contribute to the landscape of studies related to the presence of gender as an ideological marker in Spanish monolingual dictionaries. Specifically, it focuses on the lexicon related to family or kinship relationships, and more specifically on those nouns that are linked to motherhood and fatherhood. Its study responds to a differential phenomenon that does not occur in most areas of meaning: the distinction of sex is expressed in relation to the lexical meaning of words, not exclusively to gender morphemes. The dictionary, as a repository of the tradition and culture of a language, must be subject to constant revision and theorization, as this recognizes its social value and its ability to generate new and interesting approaches to understanding how complex society can be. Even though the purpose and ultimate intention in lexicographic repertoires is the impartial pursuit of neutrality, ideology imbued with tradition is embedded in the definitions analyzed through different processes that are reflected in the conceptualization of the feminine and the masculine.
